Now he's completely obsessed with losing more teeth because he wants more prizes. In fact, the other day when we were in the car, he repeatedly asked me if UPS had been to the house and if there was a package for him. I told him no, there was no package but that when the baby was born, he/she might have a little gift for each of them. Peyton was quiet for a bit and when I glanced at her in the rear-view, I could see her working something out in her head, until finally she asked: "Um, Mommy? Are the presents in your belly too?"
In other news, we got to dog sit my in-laws dog, Lulu. She was here for 2 days. It'll probably take me 2 weeks to Swiffer up all of the fur. And it'll probably take the kids 2 months to stop missing her.
I have so many obvious reasons for not wanting a dog right now: new baby, still missing Zoe, 10 feet of snow on the ground, cost (I recently added up our lifetime vet costs for Zoe -and granted, she did have a sort of rare condition, but- it totaled more than $30K over 7 years, Yikes!), etc, etc.
But then... I see the kids around a dog, and suddenly all of my very reasonable, very logical, very smart reasons for not wanting a dog simply go flying out the window and I find myself frantically searching registries for dog adoption.
Zoe slept with Oliver every night, in his bed. He never had any issues being put to bed (since she's been gone he's had some serious bedtime fear). But with Zoe, we would just say goodnight, close the door, and that was that. Sometimes, I'd watch him in the monitor afterward as he'd get out from under the covers and crawl down to the end of the bed to lay on her like a pillow. Sometimes I'd hear him whispering to her.
Over the holidays, we went to a party where there were two dogs roaming around. Peyton was in heaven, chasing them around and sneaking them little bits of food. At one point, I saw an older woman talking to her so I moved a little closer to eavesdrop.
"You really love those dogs! Do you have a dog?" the woman asked.
"Yes," Peyton answered. "I mean no. We have Zoe, but she's in the clouds."
"Oh," she frowned. "Do you have a cat?"
"No, were not cat people, " Peyton said, very seriously. "Actually, we're dog people."
I have no idea where she got that, but it's very true. We are dog people, and it's very strange to not have one. So, we'll see what happens with that. For now, though, we'll have to steal Lulu from time to time.
